School Partnerships
NDI delivers high-quality arts programming through long-term partnerships with schools in the NYC metro area. Our collaborative approach ensures deep, authentic learning—and success for every child.
Schools and families take great pride in the excellence their students achieve in NDI. Our teaching artists develop collaborative relationships with principals and classroom teachers that deeply root arts education in a school’s culture and curriculum.

More than 6,500 students participate in NDI classes each week through our In-School Program.
We partner with over 50 schools across the New York City region.
NDI primarily serves elementary schools (PreK-Grade 5).
Classes take place during the school day and are integrated into the curriculum, ensuring that the arts are an essential component of learning in our partner school communities.
NDI classes are led by teams of three teaching artists—two dance teachers/choreographers, and a musician/accompanist.
NDI programming is inclusive; all students in a selected grade (or grades) participate in the program.
Every NDI class includes live music, a crucial piece of our unique methodology.
Each year, NDI selects a curricular theme that guides the learning in our partner schools. Past themes have explored science, poetry, musical genres, visual art, and social activism.
All of our programs culminate in a joyful performance, bringing together the entire school community in celebration of the students’ achievements.

Learning the Fundamentals of Dance
Throughout the NDI program, children develop dance and performance skills by rehearsing dynamic movement and performing to live music. Students develop arts literacy, experience some of the rituals and traditions of a dance class, and perform choreography with energy and expression. They learn the importance of discipline, effort, focus, and teamwork in achieving success. Students also hone their critical thinking, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills as they grow in artistry, creativity, and imagination..
Connecting a Curricular Theme
Each year, NDI selects a curricular theme that guides the learning in all partner schools. Past themes have explored science, literacy, musical genres, visual art, global studies, and social activism. Through the theme, NDI introduces students to new cultures and big ideas, fostering in them an abiding curiosity about the world and their place in it. As they work toward a common performance goal, students learn how dance and music create meaning, build community, and move audiences.
Celebrating in a Final Performance
In culminating performances, students take to the stage to become stars in their own community. NDI’s teaching artists create original choreography and arrange or compose music inspired by the curricular theme. Students master and perform these dances for their families and the entire school community in a fully-realized theatrical production—complete with an ensemble of musicians, colorful backdrops, and costumes designed by the children.

Transforming Schools Through Dance Education
Every class is taught by three professional teaching artists: two Teacher/Choreographers and a Musician/Accompanist.
In-school programs can run for the full school year, with weekly classes taking place from October through May/June (roughly 28 weeks). NDI programs can also take the form of semester-long residencies (10 sessions in the fall, winter, or spring) or tailored to meet the needs of each school community.
NDI classes take place during the school day, and all students in a selected grade or grades participate, ensuring that dance is integral to learning in our partner school communities.
Classroom teachers are actively engaged in the NDI program, helping to connect arts education with the larger curriculum. Many teachers choose to dance with their classes.
NDI works with a single classroom of children at a time, and classes generally run 45–50 minutes (an instructional period).
All NDI programs include live music and culminate in a final performance, a celebratory event that brings together the entire school community.
